What is Functional Medicine?

Simply put, Functional Medicine addresses the person as a whole. It’s patient centered care which focuses on your lifestyle. Now I know you’re probably thinking you’ve heard “patient centered care” on commercials for huge networks, but I assure you this patient centered care is quite different.

When you go to your doctor now, think about how the conversation goes…

Your doctor: “Hi! What brings you in today?”

You: “I’ve been constipated for 23 years, but lately it’s just gotten a lot worse. It’s been 4 days since I’ve had a bowel movement. I usually go every 2 to 3 days.”

Your doctor: “Ok, I’d like you to start taking (fill in the blank with the stool softener and laxative of their choice here) and follow up with me in 7 days.”

But what's causing it?

While this method seems to be addressing the problem. Is it really? Did you find out what caused you to be constipated? Or did you simply get something to make you go more regularly?

Did they ask you about your dietary intake? (And I’m not talking about fiber intake.)

Did they ask you how much water you drink daily?

Did they ask you what you’re doing to support a healthy intestinal flora?

Did they ask you about events that you have encountered 23 years ago when the constipation first started?

I highly doubt it. Why? Because sadly, most physicians today have not been educated that these things make a difference.

From what I’ve been able to find, most medical schools give little education on nutrition. (If you’re a doc and reading this and have had more, I’d love to hear the details!)

I’ve been a patient, and I’ve not once been asked any questions that get to the root of the skin issues I’ve experienced by any of the specialists that I’ve seen in the last year and a half. And I’ve seen 4. One of which is from a very prestigious medical facility in the United States.

The dermatologist I saw actually told me that the majority of people never find out the cause of their skin issues. This is completely unacceptable to me!

In fact they all looked at me somewhat cross eyed when I went in there with a complete list of everything I’ve experienced in the last 12 years which is how long I’ve had the skin issue that progressively became worse. This was 2-3 months before I found out about Functional Medicine. What I didn’t know when I made out that list was that this way is the Functional Medicine way of thinking!

What the Functional Medicine approach does is it gets to the root of the problem. It assesses you, the person, as a whole. It answers the question “why is this happening to me?!”

You aren’t just another set of symptoms that needs a script.

You are a very detailed story and the illnesses you suffer from are an expression of something in your body that is not being addressed. It often does not even require a prescription to correct it.

You may be asking yourself, “But doesn’t a physician have to be the one practicing Functional Medicine?”

No. Bachelor’s degree prepared Registered Nurses, like myself, are eligible to practice once they have the required training. Physicians or Nurse Practitioners are required when medication needs to be adjusted or when medical advice needs to be given.

When you need one on one wellness guidance with a loving touch, you should see a nurse.

Amy Henninger, BSN, RN, AFMCP

Amy, a former Intensive Care and now ER nurse, recently realized her true calling to help others discover the root cause of their illnesses through Functional Medicine and holistic nutrition. Her drive to get to the root of what's going on in the body, and how to prevent illness, came as a result of her own difficulty of getting a diagnosis and treatment for health issues she was facing.

She has earned her Associate of Nursing degree from Ivy Tech Community College of Indianapolis, Bachelor of Nursing degree from Indiana Wesleyan University and a certificate from The Institute For Functional Medicine which is associated with the Cleveland Clinic.

Amy is currently undergoing training in Craniosacral Therapy. She will begin offering services in January 2021.
